Boston Bruins

The Rangers key rival during the Original Six era.

Memorable Moments:

  • Bobby Orr's famous "in flight" goal that ended the 1970 Stanley Cup Finals is perhaps the most well known goal in the history of the sport.
  • In the first meeting after Zdeno Chara's hit on Max Pacioretty, the Bruins destroy Montreal 7-0.
Buffalo Sabres

It's nice to see they've gone back to their old logo, rather than keep using the buffalo head logo. That is why I am displaying their original logo here. The goal horn at the old Aud was the best in the league. Lindy Ruff was always cool in my book, but he earned extra points for calling out the league on Brett Hull's "No Goal."

Memorable Moments:

Calgary Flames

Memorable Moments:

  • The famous Theo Fleury celebration after scoring an OT goal in Game 6 of the Smythe Division semifinals against the Edmonton Oilers.
Detroit Red Wings

I don't have anything against the Wings.  I respect them quite a bit, and their resurgence since the mid-90s is a good thing for the league.  Calling themselves Hockeytown is a bit much, even among American cities.  However, I can't dispute the success of 11 Stanley Cups.

Edmonton Oilers

The Oilers were a second favorite of mine as a child, mostly because they were awesome and the Rangers were not.  So much could be said about their dynasty in the 80s, but for my money they possessed the greatest offense of any team in any sport in any era.

Memorable Moments:

  • Before the calendar year was done on the 1981-82 season, Wayne Gretzky had a five goal game that propelled him to 50 goals in 39 games en route to a 92 goal campaign.
  • May 15, 1990 - Petr Klima scores in the third overtime of Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals.
  • April 16, 1991 - The Flames are doused in the first round, again, by Esa Tikkanen in Game 7.
  • June 14, 1996 - Fernando Pisani scores the first shorthanded OT goal in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals.
Hartford Whalers (now the Carolina Hurricanes)

WHA member turned sad sack NHL franchise, I know how I became a follower of the Whalers.  My fourth grade teacher's husband had a connection with the team and knowing that I enjoyed hockey, my teacher gave me a "Doug Jarvis: NHL Iron Man" poster and a team calendar.  Since moving to Carolina, I've been less a well-wisher and actually vehemently rooted against them in the 2006 Stanley Cup Finals.

Memorable Moments:

  • April 13, 1997 - Kevin Dineen scores the last goal in Hartford Whalers history.
Montreal Canadiens

24 Stanley Cups in over 100 seasons of hockey. You can't dispute the franchise's success and greatness through the decades. You also can't dispute they breed the most obnoxious fans who are willing to set anything on fire after a win, whether it's for the Cup or just the first round.

New York Rangers

My favorite team in any sport, I have been a fan since sometime in the late 80s.  If everyone has a hardship in life, mine is watching the Rangers every winter.

Memorable Moments:

  • The Rangers stave off elimination in the Cup semifinals and come back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 in 3 OT. Pete Stemkowski's goal ended one of the longest games in franchise history.
  • April 15, 1982 - Game 1 of the Patrick Division Finals, a 5-4 Blueshirts win.
  • Game 7 of the 1994 Eastern Conference Finals - Howie Rose's Matteau! Matteau! call as the Rangers end perhaps the most dramatic playoff series in history.
  • Game 4 of the 1994 Stanley Cup Finals - Trailing 2-1 in the game, Brian Leetch takes down Pavel Bure on a breakaway and a penalty shot is awarded. Bure's move was similar to one he tried on Richter during the All-Star Game at MSG earlier that season.
Toronto Maple Leafs

Thanks to Darcy Tucker and Pat Quinn, I've developed a disliking for the Leafs over the last decade.  People often say that they are hated the same way the Yankees are, which I won't dispute except to say that Yankee haters have good reason to be jealous of their success.  True the Leafs 13 Cups are second best all time, but the last one came in 1967.  Thanks to the Blackhawks, (and perhaps Wayne Gretzky) they're now on the hook for the longest drought in the league.  Remember: Losers Even After Forty Seasons.

Washington Capitals

I don't like the Caps.  I hated Dale Hunter.  I even felt a little bad for Pierre Turgeon, even though he was an Islander.  Plus, Rich Pilon (#47) dishes out a charge and spear combination for the ages.

Winnipeg Jets (now the Phoenix Coyotes)

I'm not really sure how I became a well-wisher for the Jets, probably because I felt bad for them because they were so pathetic for so long.  Still, Winnipeg deserves a team far more than Phoenix.

Memorable Moments:

  • In 1990, they took a 3-1 series lead in the Smythe Division semifinals on Dave Ellett's double OT winner.  Winnipeg would blow the series lead to the eventual Cup winners from Edmonton.
  • Teemu Selanne breaks Mike Bossy's rookie goal scoring mark with his 54th of the season, on his way to a 76 goal campaign in 1992-93.

Moments to Remember
April 15, 1982 - Game 1 of the Patrick Division Finals, a 5-4 Blueshirts win.
April 10, 1984 - Ken Morrow buries an OT winner in Game 5 to eliminate the Rangers. Islanders 3, Rangers 2
February 17, 1985 - Things get ugly during this rout at MSG. Rangers 9, Islanders 3
April 24, 1994 - The Rangers complete a dominating four game sweep of the Isles. The Rangers outscored the Islanders 22-3 and did not surrender a goal until Game 3. Rangers 5, Islanders 2
April 4, 1998 - Dan Cloutier challenges the Islanders bench. Islanders 3, Rangers 0
