To be fair, the NCAA tournament only had 25 teams in 1973, so at worst North Carolina was proclaiming themselves the 28th best team in the nation.
An undefeated regular season would normally be an excellent reason to hang a huge banner in your stadium or arena.  Not for this team in this year.
Banners for attendance?  It's not a novel idea - the Charlotte Hornets raised one for the 1988-89 season.  The WNBA's Washington Mystics did it twice - in 2002 and 2003.
The Edmonton Oilers once boasted one professional sports' greatest offensive dynasties of all time.  That's why this banner seems like such a monstrosity.
Normally, I wouldn't mock a championship banner.  However, when the league is the ABA and the puny banner looks like it's hanging from the top shelf of a Wal-Mart aisle, then there's something to pick on.
